December Meme

December 11 - Why Slytherin? Also opinions on various characters from that house would be interesting

go here on dw | or here on lj to give me more things to talk about.

[this post is unlocked. sharing is allowed]

Why not Slytherin? Slytherin is just as good a house as any of the others with just as good qualities and traits given as their core values. Just because some people turned out to be right berks doesn't make Slytherin itself a bad house.

To look at what is said by the hat about Slytherin ' those cunning folks will use any means to achieve their ends' and people freak out and think omg they are evil!1111!. It doesn't say that. It says they are cunning and that they are resourceful. They think things before before they do things. 'Fools rush in' as a saying for a reason. Sometimes you need to just do things but in a lot of occasions the traits associated with Slytherin are exactly what you need, especially when it comes to things like employment. Cunning does not mean bad. Also, let'e be realistic a lot of jobs are ruthless and you need to be prepared to kick some ass and that doesn't always involve being nice. In fact in my mind the Slytherin traits almost go side by side with 'adult' for me. Adults need to be cunning and come on, 'any means to achieve their ends' doesn't automatically mean murder o.O It is a phrase to fit a song. I think people take it far too literally.

To give some opinions on some Slytherins I picked some of the first to pop into my head.

Voldemort.

Right here is why Slytherin has a bad name. This is a straight up bad dude. He murders his way through life and squashes anyone that dares to defy him. He is cunning in the way he manipulates people and the way he takes over the Ministry from within, and he has no morals when it comes to things stopping him from getting what he wants. That seems very Slytherin but in the 'real world', it just sounds psychotic. You can't judge other Slytherins by his standards because he isn't in his right mind. Any serial killer will rampage their way through life and often are found to have manipulated various situations to their purposes.

Horace Slughorn.

To me, Horace is the best and fairest demonstration of what a Slytherin is. Horace is cunning and he makes the most of what he has. He's a fabulous Potions teacher but still just a teacher yet he networks well and makes connections and gets himself places in the world by association. He's quite the socialite in that regard. He protects his own students but in a fair way and he doesn't discriminate against muggle borns or against non-Slytherins. These are not inborn Slytherin traits that all Slytherins have. The HP series is from Harry's point of view. He only interacts with the Slytherins that clash with him and are cruel to him. Horace is one of the few men we see manage to a, fob Dumbledore off and b, manipulate him and he doesn't do it by being cruel, underhanded of evil. He does it by personifying what Slytherin really is. He is cunning. Dumblefore convinces him to come back to Hogwarts but Horace makes sure it is on his terms and he holds off Dumbledore's attempts to get his memory for months if not years. He's a strong character and more importantly a good man. Yeah he's a snob that collects talented people like baubles but we all know people like that.

Draco Malfoy.

I don't think Draco is particularly fitting of Slytherin house. I actually think he'd be more suited to Ravenclaw house. Unpopular opinion I'm sure. Draco is very clever but he doesn't know when to pick his fights or how to use things at his disposal to his advantage. He basically threatens Harry with his father a lot. He doesn't network well at all. He is pinned as 'evil' by Ron and such from the start and Harry always suspects him of being up to something but while yes he fixed the cabinet his motive was not power or prestige for himself but the safety of his family. Slytherins are supposed to 'look out for their own' but a, that isn't surprising seeing as everyone is prejudiced against them and b, putting yourself on the line for your family is probably more associated with Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. When it comes down to it though, he cannot kill Dumbledore. Being a slytherin does not make him capable of murder.

My point is, Slytherins are diverse and they are just as capable of turning out as good people as they are bad people and in between. Voldemort is a straight up bad dude where Horace is a snobby but essentially good man and Draco is gray.

comments

[public]December Meme

December 07 - Which Avengers character is your favourite and why?

go here on dw | or here on lj to give me more things to talk about.

Thor.* slight spoilers for Thor The Dark World but nothing outright.

Thor gets so much ...not hate but I think in the Avengers people think of him as this stupid idiot and I hate that. He's on another planet, surrounded by strangers (apart from former enemy, really, Son of Coul Phil~), and all this technology that isn't the same as on Asgard knowing his brother is causing a war and trying to fix it all while being told he isn't his brother by Loki, that his brother is evil by his 'teammates' and still dealing from the knowledge that Loki isn't dead. He has a lot on his plate and yet he still steps up to the plate.

Thor is actually fabulous across the three films and here is why.

- When he is sent to Earth to learn his lesson he does. He doesn't learn it in a 'well that didn't work, guess I should do this', but he actually takes it in and is willing to sacrifice himself to save a planet he thinks beneath him at the start (URgh, this is Earth?) and some people he has known a few days. Ok, so he really likes Jane but he's hundreds of years old...and has known her a few days.

- Thor is a prince. He has probably had people wait on him hand and foot all his life apart from when he was away hunting or at war. Yet we see him throwing a towel over his shoulder and helping to make breakfast. He thanks people for their help. He tries to help Jane get her stuff back when he really doesn't have to.

- Thor treats Bruce like a person. He treats Hulk like a part of Bruce. Thor is nice and respectful to Bruce and isn't afraid of him. Imagine how huge that is for Bruce?! 'this guy turns into a big green guy with a big punch....ok. I've fought bigger'. Natasha comes close in that when Bruce is changing she tries to bring him back but once he has transformed, game over. Thor continues to try and communicate with Bruce.

- He checks up on Jane but he doesn't rush off to go see her. He is focused on the task at hand. He doesn't let his emotions get in the way of what needs to be done. Tony may be 'an ass' to many but he is actually pretty emotional where Thor is willing to ignore Jane and fight his brother when Loki refuses to stand down because that is what he needs to do. Thor doesn't need to defend Earth and its 'petty and tiny' humans but he chooses to. He could let Earth burn and run back to Asgard to prepare and have an army with better weapons and strategy but instead he stands with the Avengers. I don't think he gets enough credit for that.

- Given Asgard's society and women's place within it, props to Thor for never questioning Natasha's place in the team before seeing her in action. He sees her as a warrior and accepts it, probably because he knows what Sif can do. He could easily have seen Sif as an exception and questioned things.

- He generally doesn't ask questions about his teammates or what gives them their power. These are not things people like Tony, Steve or Bruce would like to talk about I'm sure. Tony is very proud of being Iron Man but he hardly got his 'power' in a nice way. He's a good soldier in that way. He gets his warriors and his men and he goes into battle. He is a Prince and yet he allows himself to fall into line behind Fury and then behind Captain America. Many would have something to say about that. He doesn't.

- He proceeds to spend the next several years cleaning up his brother's mess and restoring peace. Much has been said at Hogun staying behind on his home world and it pushing aside a character of colour BUT the idea in itself is lovely. Thor has accepted Hogun has done his time at his side and is giving him time with his family now. It is a nice gesture but in terms of equality on screen, might have been nicer if it was another member of the warriors 3 for some.

- Learns not to trust Loki fully. This is a pretty big deal given any fanfic going has him being duped again and again. Nope, he learns from his mistakes but he appreciates the uses Loki has. A leader needs that sort of quality.

- He's willing to stand up to his father over Jane. Again and again. Makes him a good guy I think. He also fully respects her abilities and intelligence even if she has different names for the things he has grown to know.

- He recognises that sometimes a leader doesn't know best but he doesn't just run off half-cocked like in Thor 1. He thinks about what he has to do and how to do it before going against Odin's will. Thor is a trier. He tries to do the right thing. He makes mistakes but he then takes responsibility for those mistakes. He knows when and when not to question authority.

Thor is...well he's a good Asgardian chap. Basically, fandom and fans give Thor this reputation as a big dumb brute with big arms and a hammer who is always outwitted by his brother and yet I think he is one of the most level headed Avengers with his priorities firmly in check. He isn't the Thor that got thrown out into New Mexico. He's grown, leaps and bounds as a character and he's fabulous. He isn't perfect. He still gets outwitted and he still makes mistakes but he's my favourite Avenger because for all he's the Asguardian Prince from outer-space somehow he feels most human to me. Chris Hemsworth is fabulous as Thor. Yay. Thor.

comments

[public] In Defence of Molly Weasley

* unlocked this so feel free to link it elsewhere if you are so inclined.

People have a lot to say about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, whether it be film or novel version, and one constant I tend to see is about the death of Bellatrix. Many people don't feel she should have been killed by Molly Weasley. They don't think Molly is capable of taking out Bellatrix and I'd like to address that.

comments

body hair~ (unlocked)

I've been meaning to bring up this topic for ages and then I found this vid so boom boom. Today I've had some awesome sports moments and then I've been looking at feminist zines online and queer zines and blogs and stuff. I feel a lot more positive today. I'm so positive and upbeat I've decided to try my own hand at zine making and do one about asexuality or something.

Anyway, hair. I think hair is a very stereotypical subject brought up around two groups of people, queer women and feminists. Of course body hair is always used as a standard of beauty but narrow minded souls expect feminists and gay women to not shave simply because they are gay or a feminist or both, like it is some sort of coded sign for such things. That is a load of bullshit. You can shave and be a feminist. You can not shave and be a feminist. Queer women shave. Queer women don't shave. Some queer women shave in the summer and not in the winter. The fact is it should be each individual's choice about what they do with their body hair. This includes men come to think about it because I've seen far too many instances of partner's of both genders/sexes forcing their partner to shave facial, chest, back and other body hair because they don't like it. Awesome you don't like it but it isn't your hair so back off.

Women though, face more stereotype thoughts that body hair is somehow magically dirty and unhygienic once it happens to grow from a women's armpit and not a man's. Bullshit of the highest order and yet many still shave their body hair because they feel it dirty or not feminine. Like everything else bodies are equipped with minus our appendix, body hair serves a purpose. It isn't there for the hell of it. It is a woman's choice what they chose to do with their body-hair and no one else's. Society should back off. People need to stop being narrow-minded if they see a woman with hairy armpits. It isn't a sign that they are going to morph into the Hulk and start beating you around with a chair.

A woman is not less of a feminist if they wear dresses, high heels and shave every two days while making sure their nail-polish is perfect. A woman is not more hardcore~ if they don't shave. It is about thinking about why you shave, why you think about your body hair the way you do. Do you shave because you feel better, find it looks better on you or because society has told you you're X if you don't? There seems to be this myth that women are incapable of going into a bath or shower without using a razor or waxing so therefore if you see body hair on them then clearly they haven't washed for a week. No.

Personally, my shaving depends. I'm not all that hairy and despite my natural hair being very dark on my head, my other body hair is a lot lighter. I haven't shaved my arms in months and you have to hold my arm up to a light to see any hair. It isn't that long or thick. All I achieve by shaving my arms is red skin and a lot of pain because razors make my eczema flare like WHOA. My legs are in the same boat. I don't shave them because it hurts and you can hardly see any hair anyway. The only times I now shave my legs are when for some odd reason the hair comes in in patches? So if I was wearing a skirt or something there would be patches of hair and that looks stupid so I shave it. If I'm just lightly hairy everywhere I really couldn't care less. The burning sensation is so not worth it. There is also the fact that my hair protects my skin from being hit by as many things in the air likely to upset my eczema. I'm not making a statement and if I was it would be 'I don't like being in pain' which is normal no?

My armpits I shave because if I don't I get too sweaty and then it hurts and itches and burns like hell. It hurts to do it but I will take that 20 minute burn every few days over hours of it. I don't care who sees. If someone gets themselves in a spin over body hair they have the problem not me. And whoa ain't no razors or waxing strips going near my folds. Ouch and eczema and rashes and no. Trimmed so I don't swelter on my period and die from a combination of swearing cramps and searing itchy pain.

None of my shaving habits are about appearance.

None of my shaving habits are about what other people want.

There is nothing wrong with my shaving habits and as long as yours are your decision then there is nothing wrong with yours either. I can't stand when my mum tells my dad to shave. That isn't her call. That isn't her business. Just like he gets no say on when she shaves her legs.

Body hair belongs to the body and the body belongs to the person.

comments

In Defense of Iron Man 3 (unlocked post)

It has come to my attention that Iron Man 3 is taking a lot of heat for being racist and ablest among other things. I don't agree fully with all the opinions and this is why.

~ this post is now unlocked so feel free to link. lots of meta floating about so yeah, made mine available too.

comments

fanmix: star wars

Fandom:Star Wars
Subject:Anakin Skywalker
Title:Saviour of All and None
Warnings/Notes:Anakin Skywalker is one of the main characters in all six of the star wars movies. He is a young boy who is trained as a Jedi Knight and then falls to the dark side of the ‘force’ becoming a Sith Lord. This mix is about his transformation from a young Jedi to a Sith.

( saviour of all and none )

comments

The Hogwarts Sorting System and the Sorting of Hermione Granger

The Hogwarts Sorting System and the Sorting of Hermione Granger

Word Count: 2245

So, while doing that meme the other day about which house I would want to be in at Hogwarts, it really got me thinking about what it means to be in a House at Hogwarts and how the hat goes about sorting you. First and foremost, Hogwarts is an academic institution, which has the purpose of providing young witches and wizards with an education and the ability to control their magic so that they do not injure either themselves or others.

The qualities of the Hogwarts houses seem to be such small boxes in which to fit every young witch and wizard to go to Hogwarts. Surely, people are more diverse than if they are brave, hard working, cunning or witty? I think that if anyone looks into themselves they can find justifications for being in any of the Hogwarts houses. Yes, some aspects may be stronger than others but it made me think both of the students that could so easily have ended up in another house, like Harry, and then about students that could so easily have fitted in with any house based on what that house originally stood for. These thoughts brought me to Hermione Granger.

I think that Hermione could easily have gone into any house at Hogwarts. I have often wondered just why she was put into Gryffindor at all, other than to provide Harry with the answers and facts that Jo wanted to put forward. She often said that if she had to provide information and have it be credible, she gave it to the reader through either Dumbledore or Hermione.

These are some traits I feel that Hermione has, matched to certain houses which I think is pretty interesting, as is looking at the impact of the Sorting procedures as a whole.

( cut, because i’ve written shorter university essays o.o )

comments

Friending Meme

DW is quiet at times as we know. Some people have a DW but don't log in much as they don't have friends and finding some can be dauntng at times so I present a general friending meme! This is not aimed at one fandom, or fandom in general, but at people so hopefully you could meet some more like-minded people! ♥

What you need to fill out.

Name:
Age:
Location:
A defining trait:

Lists of things that people love can put people off when they might actually get on with someone really well I find! So, five things you adore and/or would love to meet more fans of!

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

What are your interests and/or what are you passionate about?

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Are these the things you post most about or is it other things? What does your journal mean to you? What else do you post?

What sort of people would you like to meet through this? Let’s assume we’re all nice!

1.
2.
3.
4.
